Oxford is one of our favourite day out destinations. It’s an ancient university city, blessed with some of the nation’s most spectacular architecture, as well as the best shops, restaurants and bars just waiting to be explored. It’s less than 40 minutes from some of our featured cottages in the villages of Old Minster Lovell, Shilton and Widford.

There’s so much to do for all ages, so you can keep the whole family entertained. But what if you’re planning on bringing your furry friend along for the day? Well, there’s something for them too. Here are 7 of the best dog friendly pubs to try in the city…

1. The Perch

The Perch on Binsey Lane is one of the oldest pubs in Oxford, and is ideal for dog walkers. There’s a muddy boot cleaner at the entrance (so you won’t have to worry if you’ve been exploring the outdoors like a true adventurer) and your doggy is welcome to join you whilst you dine or grab a pint.

2. The Royal Oak

A beautiful in a central location with three beer gardens, making it the perfect summer spot for four legged pals. Dogs have to kept on a lead, but they will be treated to free treats by the bar staff so it’s a great compromise. This pub is located on Woodstock Road.

3. Old Bookbinders Arms

With a superb city centre location, the Old Bookbinders Arms is a convenient pit stop for thirsty pups and owners. A traditional pub with a relaxed atmosphere, and plenty of real ales to choose from. French bistro style food is also served here and outdoor seating makes it a favourite in the summer.

4. The Trout

Want a pub with great views? Head to The Trout Inn, which is set on the banks of The Thames with a large outdoor area. This 17th Century stone building features exposed wooden beams and traditional interiors, and they serve a mean Sunday Roast if you’re in Oxford over the weekend.

5. The White Hart

Just a short 15 minutes outside of the city centre is a country pub made for foodies. Located in the Oxford village of Wytham, The White Hart is a cosy little dining spot that welcomes the whole family – including four legged creatures. Lunch is served daily, as well as an A La Carte menu, Kid’s Menu and Sunday Lunch menu.

6. The Isis Farmhouse

This is a stunning riverside pub with an impressive beer garden overlooking The River Thames (ancient name, The Isis). Set in a converted barn, The Isis Farmhouse is a place to come if you’re in the mood for something homemade. Try their delicious homemade cakes or enjoy a sitting of cream tea, indulge in their freshly made hot meals, or quench your thirst with the local beers and ales.

7. King’s Arms

Over 400 years old, the King’s Arm’s is perhaps the most famous pub in Oxford. It boasts great beer and a great atmosphere, with friendly staff who welcome locals, tourists, students and dog owners alike. There’s also a great food menu, serving up everything from small plates and homemade pies to sandwiches and baked potatoes.
