Dog-Friendly Walks in the Cotswolds

Going on holiday without your pooch is just not the same as having your favourite furry family member with you. We have lots of lovely dog-friendly cottages here in the Cotswolds with beautiful gardens and walks from your doorstep.

Stretching over 2000km, the Cotswolds has so many walks for all abilities and tastes and so makes the perfect canine getaway. A holiday cottage is such a great way to leave routine behind and spend as much time as possible soaking up the lovely outdoors with your favourite four-legged walking companion.

Here we take you across the best bits of the Cotswold countryside looking at some of the very best dog-friendly walks and views in England!

Cotswold Village and Estate Parkland

Dogs are made very welcome at the Broadway Tower estate, perched in the North Cotswolds, between Chipping Campden and Winchcombe.

We’d recommend this 4-mile circular walk, starting in the picturesque village of Broadway. It’s a very dog-friendly trail, taking walkers and their bouncy companions along part of the famous Cotswold Way, renowned for being a 102 mile National Trail running all the way from Chipping Campden to Bath. At Broadway Tower, you can enjoy the spectacular views from the second highest point in the Cotswolds (the highest point in the Cotswolds is Cleeve Hill) and as this is one of the top attractions in the Cotswolds, there are generally a few people around for a play and a stroke. When dog walking on the Broadway Tower estate, leads must be used as a beautiful herd of deer wander free.

For a shorter walk at Broadway Tower that also includes a dog-friendly cafe, start at Morris & Brown, where you will find dog-friendly seating areas. From here, enjoy a relaxing 20-minute amble that is the Broadway Tower Round, taking in shopping and coffee at the Tower Barn mid-way and the surrounding 50-acre estate and of course the tower itself.

Cotswolds Limestone Ridge

Now heading to the highest point in the Cotswolds, the famous limestone ridge of Cleeve Hill holds a commanding position just outside Cheltenham, offering the best views in the area.

Circular walks are always a winner for dogs and this one is a good length, offering lots of varied terrain along the way. It starts at a former quarry car park close to Cleeve Hill Golf Club and journeys for 6-miles through woodland, across streams and over the region’s precious limestone grassland, brimming with wildflowers and butterflies. There are glorious views down to Winchcombe, before you head along the famous Cotswold Way, taking in the 17th century Postlip Hall and at Postlip Farm there’s a lovely little stream that provides a perfect refreshment and paw cooling stop. This walk, taking you along the Cleeve Hill escarpment, offers some of the finest views in England. Keep dogs on leads for the final part of this walk that brings you back through the golf course and to the club house, where you can plan your next walkies. There’s lots of other activities to explore in Cheltenham, the ‘cultural capital of the Cotswolds’.

Arboretum and a Pub

There’s little that beats a game of chase with a favourite ball or fetch with a large stick in a large open space. And that’s exactly what you’ll find at Westonbirt Arboretum, a National Arboretum just outside the Cotswold town of Tetbury, in the heart of the Cotswolds. Covering 600-acres and packed with a rich variety of 18,000 trees and shrubs, Westonbirt Arboretum offers 17 miles of marked paths and grassed areas, with lots of smells and sticks to keep pooch entertained. Dogs are welcome in over two thirds of the arboretum and Silk Wood, the Downs and the main visitor area are the places to head to, with tails wagging. Pop into the dog-friendly pub the Hare & Hounds in Tetbury, which is just down the road.

Enjoy a game of fetch at Westonbirt Arboretum and a welcoming drink at the dog-friendly pub, the Hare & Hounds.

Wildlife Park & Gardens

Awarded most dog-friendly day out in the UK on numerous occasions by the Kennel Club, Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens is a must when looking for a family-friendly day out that your pooch will enjoy too.

Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens welcomes well-behaved dogs and lies just outside the Cotswolds, near Burford, less than an hour north of Oxford.

Here you’ll find 160 acres of outdoor parkland and over 260 species of animals from around the world, making it a popular day out for the whole family. The rhinos, giraffes and other large exotic animals are used to dogs, so much so that a charity, Dogs for Good, come to Cotswold Wildlife Park as part of their pup training programme. Farm Tracks and Hamlets

Just outside of the popular North Cotswold town of Broadway is the delightful village of Blockley. The two village pubs in Blockley are dog-friendly, The Crown and The Great Western Arms, and this delightful village is surrounded by quintessential English countryside that is perfect for days out walking. There are refreshments at the other end of this circular walk to Batsford too.

This 7.9km loop takes you from Blockley to the Batsford Park estate and the pretty hamlet of Batsford, offering 56-acres of beautiful parkland and a beautiful arboretum that both welcomes dogs. Leads are required at Batsford Arboretum and care must be taken on hot days where the tarmac paths get hot. The natural spring-fed streams and ponds around the arboretum are popular with four-legged visitors and there are bowls of water dotted around the gardens. Return back to Broadway over farm tracks, fields and woodland.
