Things to Do and See in Tetbury


Are you new to Tetbury? Let us walk you through the many highlights in the small town of Tetbury in the heart of the Cotswold countryside. Tetbury is located at the southern gateway of the Cotswolds, surrounded by pretty villages and only ten miles outside of the Roman town of Cirencester.

The elegant merchant houses and honey-coloured cosy cottages of Tetbury are clustered around the magnificent spire of St Mary The Virgin and a 17th-century market hall. Tetbury is well known for its royal connections with the Highgrove shop in Tetbury town centre selling organic food and luxury homeware inspired by the Royal Gardens at nearby Highgrove. Whilst there’s something for all tastes in Tetbury, here we give you a round-up of some of the highlights.

This is an exciting new attraction for Tetbury. Tetbury Goods Centre is a popular Arts Centre that is a short walk from Tetbury town centre, housed in a recently renovated former Victorian railway building. A busy line-up of children’s theatre, live music, exhibitions and cinema nights makes this a thriving new cultural attraction in Tetbury. The Rail Lands is part of Tetbury Goods Shed and is a linear 3-mile cycle and walking route that we’d also recommend when staying in the area.

Westonbirt Arboretum

“A magical tree garden”, Westonbirt Arboretum is the most well-known Arboretum in the UK
and is the perfect place to relax. It is only a 10-minute drive from Tetbury and makes a great day trip, with seasonal trails for kids and there is also a busy line-up of music concerts. There are over 2.5k different species to discover over 600 acres here at Westonbirt Arboretum, which is to be featured in a new nature-inspired stamp collection from Royal Mail for 2019 to celebrate 100 years of public forests.

National Trust Houses and Gardens Near Tetbury

There are several notable manor houses with beautiful gardens that are not too far from Tetbury and they are a great place to breathe in the fresh air and take in the famous Cotswold countryside.

Newark Park is a National Trust owned Tudor hunting lodge set on the famous Cotswold escarpment, just 10 miles from Tetbury. Here you can choose from three trails around the estate grounds that are delightful all year round. Rodmarton Manor is an 8-acre Arts & Crafts country manor house less than 5 miles from Tetbury. Tours of Chavenage House, just outside Tetbury, offers visitors a glimpse of life in a wonderful Elizabethan manor house and is where the BBC’s romantic saga Poldark was filmed.

Antique Shopping

Tetbury is also the centre for antiques in the Cotswolds. Clustered along Long Street and Church Street you’ll find a wealth of the best antique dealers and shops. Brownrigg Antiques is a particularly famous one, selling decorative collectables such as statues and ornaments and celebrities can sometimes be found here browsing alongside the treasure hunters.

The Chipping Steps

A walk around Tetbury should include the quirky Chipping Steps, located in the corner of The Chipping car park – steep steps up a narrow street flanked by beautiful weaver’s cottages, which have a delightful rural atmosphere taking visitors back to when farmhands and domestic staff would offer their services from this former medieval market. Walk through the town centre, looking up at the listed buildings. Tetbury centre is a protected conservation area and is known as an architectural gem’ offering over 400-years of different fashions in building, including quaint wool merchant houses. St Mary’s Church, just off The Green, is open daily for visitors to go and sit in peace for a while. The elegant, tall spire is impressive and can be taken in from the peaceful church gardens.

Tetbury in the south Cotswolds is not far from London, only a 2-house train or car drive away. The nearest train station is Kemble, which is 7.5 miles outside of Tetbury. Tetbury is perfect for a weekend escape as well as a base for exploring more of the Cotswolds for a longer break.
