“Excellent cottage with bags of character which remained cool throughout the excessively hot weather.”

The only suggestion we would make would be to add a second hand hold on the very steep spiral stairs up to the bedrooms. Especially descending as currently you have to put a hand on each wall for the first two or three stairs before reaching the single hand hold as there is no hand rail.

The property

Red Lion Cottage is a stunning Cotswold stone cottage, which is believed to date back to c.1750, and is located on a peaceful country lane, on the edge of the picturesque village of Blockley. The beautiful surrounding Cotswold countryside is visible from the cottage, and many lovely walks are accessible directly from the front door. Once famous for its many silk mills, Blockley is located well away from busy roads and tourist routes, yet still benefits from having two pubs and a community owned village shop/cafe, as well as a historic Norman church. The village is also close to the popular Cotswold market towns of Moreton-in-Marsh, Chipping Camden and Stow-on-the-Wold, as well as being well placed for trips to popular tourist destinations, such as Blenheim Palace, Stratford-upon-Avon, and Oxford. Recently refurbished to a high standard, the owners of this grade II listed cottage have combined a warm, contemporary style with the original character features, including exposed beams, limestone flooring and a stunning inglenook fireplace, with a wood burning stove. The character and style of the cottage have been complemented by modern facilities, including wireless internet access, a Smart TV and a well presented kitchen. Red Lion Cottage sleeps four people, in two bedrooms, with two bathrooms. There is a small garden terrace, which is perfect for catching the sun, and has glorious views of the surrounding countryside. The cottage is perfect for a family, or friends, seeking a relaxing break in the heart of the Cotswold countryside. Sitting on a raised pavement, Red Lion Cottage is one of a short row of cottages, on a quiet no through lane in the picturesque village of Blockley. The front door opens directly into the main living area, with the following rooms on the ground floor: Living/dining room: The spacious living room is bright and airy, with lovely character features, including oak beams, a window seat, and a large, Cotswold stone inglenook fireplace, with a wood burning stove. The room contains two comfortable two-seater sofas, an arm chair, and a Cuban mahogany dining table that can comfortably seat four. There is also a Smart TV, with a DVD player; Kitchen: Two steps lead up from the living room to the well presented kitchen, which contains an electric oven with a four-ring gas hob, an integrated fridge/freezer box, dishwasher, toaster and kettle; Shower room: A door from the kitchen leads into a large shower room, which has a beautiful limestone floor and is decorated with Orla Kiely wallpaper. There is a walk-in shower, heated towel rail, wash basin and toilet. Steep, winding stairs lead up from the living room to the first floor landing, off which are the following rooms: Master bedroom: A stylish room, with a window seat, which looks out over beautiful countryside. The room contains a wrought iron double bed and large built-in wardrobes; Bedroom 2: Another lovely room, also with a wooden window seat that provides stunning views of the surrounding Blockley Valley. This room contains a double bed and a chest of drawers; Family bathroom: Contains a Victorian style slipper bath, heated towel rail, wash basin and toilet. Stone steps lead up from the kitchen to a small, south-west facing garden terrace, which is a lovely suntrap in the warmer months of the year. The terrace has raised borders, and a gravelled seating area, with a table and four chairs. Quiet, on street parking is freely available on the no through road that the cottage sits on.

About the location

BLOCKLEY

Moreton-in-Marsh 3 miles; Bourton-on-the-Water 11 miles; Cheltenham 22 miles.

An ancient village once famous for its silk and corn mills, Blockley lies just 3 miles from Moreton-in-Marsh and features a unique collection of honey-coloured buildings with a pretty village green, two excellent pubs, serving hearty food and real ale, as well as a village store and café, serving dinner on a Friday night. Many walks and cycle rides through the beautiful rolling countryside of the Cotswolds can be enjoyed from the centre of the village, with the Macmillan Way, Heart of England Way and the Gloucestershire and Monarch's Way all running close by. Very close by, Moreton-in-Marsh boasts many elegant 18th century buildings and is home to traditional inns, tea rooms, restaurants and individual shops to suit all tastes. It also offers its own train station and lies on the intersection of the Paddington rail line from London. The town hosts the Moreton-In-Marsh Show, one of the UK's largest one-day agricultural shows, as well as the Moreton Beer Festival, an annual French Market, and a large outdoor market every Tuesday. The highest town in the Cotswolds, this ancient market town has played host to many fairs since the 12th century and today holds a biannual Gypsy Horse Fair, craft fairs and monthly farmers' market. Close by is Bourton-on-the-Water, which lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is known as the Venice of the Cotswolds as the River Windrush runs through the centre. Also within reach is the spa town of Cheltenham, boasting an incredible range of shops, cinemas, theatres, restaurants and pubs, as well as being famous for its horseracing festival in March, culminating in the Gold Cup steeplechase. Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon, Bath, Worcester and the waterfront city of Gloucester are also within driving distance, making Blockley a great base for a Cotswolds holiday.

Note: An initial basket of logs is provided for the woodburning stove between October and April; guests should purchase logs locally outside of these months.

Note: A telephone is provided for emergency calls only, as mobile phone reception can be very poor in the Valley.

Note: Children under the age of seven are not accepted.
