“The property itself is really nice.”

It was clean, spacious and had the hallmarks of a period property. Poulton is only a short drive away from towns such as Stow, Bourton on the Water, Bibury and Burford. There is little to do in Poulton, but that was totally fine for us as we just went on short nearby walks, and had a bbq in the garden. We also used it as a base to travel to other towns. Overall, thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage and would recommend. ...

The check-in and check-out times are unfair. 5pm check-in without any chance of an early check-in is ridiculous. Most hotels allow for a check-in at 2pm. A checkout time of 11am should be a minimum. On top of that, they require bins to be thrown out and sheets to be removed (despite the high cost and ample cleaning time given the check-in and checkout times).

Thank you for taking the time to give us some constructive feedback. I can assure you we are taking everything onboard. We are looking into making the check-in time earlier as it was pushed back due to complications with Covid. I really do apologize for any inconvenience caused and will also raise the comment regarding sheets and bins. We really hope to welcome you back. Best wishes, Character Cottages Property Owner

About the location

Fairford 3.3 miles; Gloucester 23.3 miles; Cirencester 5.5 miles; Stow-on-the-Wold 22.1 miles.

Poulton is a small rural historic village situated close to the Cotswolds’ Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, approximately 24 miles south east of Gloucester. Poulton was registered in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Poltone. Historically, the village was part of the county of Wiltshire and for centuries was—physically detached from Wiltshire – an enclave of Gloucestershire. In 1844, Poulton became part of Gloucestershire under the Counties (Detached Parts) Act. Poulton is now home to a community run village shop, a local pub, The Falcon Inn, a traditional British country dining pub serving locally brewed cask ales, an interesting wine list and classic English dishes and a village hall. The thriving market town of Fairford is just over three miles away nestling on the River Coln, and offers many amenities including individual shops, cafes and traditional pubs, as well as hosting a weekly country market offering home grown and homemade produce and country crafts. RAF Fairford is home of the Royal International Air Tattoo, held in July every year, one of the largest military air shows in the world with a reputation as one of the UK's top outdoor family events. Just a short drive away is the beautiful Roman town of Cirencester, gateway to the Cotswolds, which offers excellent shopping, restaurants, ancient buildings, museums and antique markets. The Cotswold Water Park is Britain’s largest water park, set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, covering 40 square miles and made up of over 40 lakes. A wide range of activities is on offer including water skiing, cycling, horse riding, boating, golf and fishing and for the nature lovers the park offers an abundance of bird and animal life, all of which can be seen throughout the year on the three nature reserves. A little further afield visit the historic town of Malmesbury with its 12th century Benedictine abbey and Westonbirt Arboretum with an extensive collection of trees and shrubs. The honey-coloured Cotswold towns of Stow-on-the-Wold and Bourton-on-the-Water and the university city of Oxford are also easily accessible. Poulton is an excellent location for touring this varied area.

Note: An initial basket of logs is provided for the woodburning stove between October and March and further log supplies can be purchased locally.

Note: This is an old, Grade II listed property and has many character features, including narrow and steep stairs, some low ceilings with restrictive head height, multiple floors and a raised lawn in the garden that is not fenced, which could pose difficulty to guests with limited mobility.
