“Apart from taking a long time to find (could be our mistake or because it is too tucked away), the cottage and facilities were phenomenal.”

The comfort, the cleanliness and the helpful, friendly locals left a positive impact on us. The cake was also very welcome with a cup of tea. We would suggest maybe a little bit of milk upon arrival as we arrived late and did not have time to go shopping. Other than that, we would recommend the cottage and rate it a 9 1/2 out of 10. Keep it up.

The property

The Hermitage is a romantic Cotswold stone cottage, located in the large grounds of a beautiful manor house in the picturesque village of Poulton, surrounded by beautiful countryside. Although small, Poulton has a well-regarded pub and a nice park close to the cottage. The village is five miles away from the Roman town of Cirencester, the largest market town in the Cotswolds, and is also close to many other picture-postcard Cotswold villages, including Bibury, Barnsley and Eastleach, with the stunning Coln Valley just a short drive away. As well as being close to the many beautiful towns and villages of the Cotswolds, Poulton is also well placed for exploring further afield places, such as Oxford, Bath, or even a day-trip into London. This charming cottage was stylishly refurbished by an interior designer in early 2017, adding a lovely contemporary style that enhances the character features, which include stone mullion windows and a beautiful wood burning stove. This character is complemented by the cottage’s modern facilities, including wireless internet access, a Smart TV and a well-presented kitchen. The Hermitage sleeps two guests in a king size bed, with a lovely bathroom. There is a beautiful garden at the side of the property, and off street parking is available. This is a perfect option for a couple looking for a relaxing break, in a stylish property. Manor Cottage, a lovely property that sleeps 4+1 in two bedrooms, is next door to The Hermitage, also in the grounds of the manor house. Sitting in the grounds of Poulton’s lovely manor house, The Hermitage is a charming, self-contained cottage. The lovely oak front door opens into the main room, and the following rooms are in the cottage: Bedroom/living room: A stylish and inviting space with stone mullion windows and a cosy wood burning stove. This large room contains a king size bed, a dining table with four chairs, an arm chair, small sofa and a Smart TV; Kitchen: A step leads down from the living area to the well-presented kitchen, which contains an electric oven, four ring induction hob, fridge, slimline dishwasher, washing machine, toaster and kettle; Bathroom: Located off the kitchen, the bathroom contains a large walk in shower, toilet and wash basin. Directly outside the cottage, there is a private, unenclosed garden area. This includes a peaceful patio area, with a table and four chairs, plus a charcoal barbecue. There is private parking for one car directly outside the cottage.

About the location

POULTON

Fairford 3.3 miles; Gloucester 23.3 miles; Cirencester 5.5 miles; Stow-on-the-Wold 22.1 miles.

Poulton is a small rural historic village situated close to the Cotswolds’ Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, approximately 24 miles south east of Gloucester. Poulton was registered in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Poltone. Historically, the village was part of the county of Wiltshire and for centuries was—physically detached from Wiltshire – an enclave of Gloucestershire. In 1844, Poulton became part of Gloucestershire under the Counties (Detached Parts) Act. Poulton is now home to a community run village shop, a local pub, The Falcon Inn, a traditional British country dining pub serving locally brewed cask ales, an interesting wine list and classic English dishes and a village hall. The thriving market town of Fairford is just over three miles away nestling on the River Coln, and offers many amenities including individual shops, cafes and traditional pubs, as well as hosting a weekly country market offering home grown and homemade produce and country crafts. RAF Fairford is home of the Royal International Air Tattoo, held in July every year, one of the largest military air shows in the world with a reputation as one of the UK's top outdoor family events. Just a short drive away is the beautiful Roman town of Cirencester, gateway to the Cotswolds, which offers excellent shopping, restaurants, ancient buildings, museums and antique markets. The Cotswold Water Park is Britain’s largest water park, set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, covering 40 square miles and made up of over 40 lakes. A wide range of activities is on offer including water skiing, cycling, horse riding, boating, golf and fishing and for the nature lovers the park offers an abundance of bird and animal life, all of which can be seen throughout the year on the three nature reserves. A little further afield visit the historic town of Malmesbury with its 12th century Benedictine abbey and Westonbirt Arboretum with an extensive collection of trees and shrubs. The honey-coloured Cotswold towns of Stow-on-the-Wold and Bourton-on-the-Water and the university city of Oxford are also easily accessible. Poulton is an excellent location for touring this varied area.

Note: This is an old property and has many character features, including low door frames, a step down into the cottage and a step from the living area into the kitchen, which could pose difficulty to guests with limited mobility. Note: The smoke detectors operate on a sound only basis and, therefore, those who have serious impairment of hearing may not be able to hear the alarm systems and could be at risk.
