“This is a beautiful, mostly comfortable cottage.”

The beds were comfortable. The sofas and armchairs were comfortable. The bathroom was spacious and had a good-sized shower cubible with good water pressure. Wifi coverage in the house was good. The fridge is only a small larder fridge, so don't buy too much food. We stayed here for a week in January and found the house quite cold even with all of the electric heaters switched on. We definitely needed to put the fire on. A basket was full of logs when we arrived, which was enough for fires on ...

A basket was full of logs when we arrived, which was enough for fires on two afternoons - although we were not supplied with any fire lighters so had to go buy our own. Many cottages provide a welcome pack of say a pint of milk and a pack of biscuits, but none was provided here - so make sure you bring whatever you need to make a tea or coffee. Most cottages have instructions on recycling, but there were none here. I would have liked instructions in the manual on recycling. I did have a question for the company that manages the cottage: there's a name and mobile phone number prominently displayed in the cottage. I texted the number on Saturday and had yet to receive a reply 6 days later - so I was disappointed by the customer service provided by the company that manages the cottage. However, the property itself was clean and comfortable. The local pub was buzzy and had a simple but good menu. The local cafe was dog friendly downstairs. The NISA shop next door to the cafe had a decent range of products at reasonable prices, too. Overall, we enjoyed our trip very much.

The property

Jackdaw Cottage is a charming honey-coloured traditional cotswold stone cottage, the first of a row of three in a quiet lane close to the heart of the beautiful village of Blockley. The historic village of Blockley is very peaceful and picturesque, yet benefits from having two pubs, a restaurant, and a community owned village shop & café. There is also a historic Norman church in the centre of the village and numerous beautiful country walks are accessible directly from the cottage. The cottage has recently been refurbished by its owners, to enhance its cosy feel. Traditional character features, such as wooden beams and a large stone fireplace with wood burning stove, are complemented by modern facilities, including wireless internet access, a Freeview TV and a well presented kitchen. There is an enclosed garden and off-street parking for one car, with free on street parking readily available. Jackdaw Cottage is an ideal retreat for friends, couples or a family, looking for a peaceful getaway. The front door of Jackdaw Cottage is accessed via the garden and opens into the kitchen/dining room, one of the three ground floor rooms: Living room: a lovely, cosy cottage living room, with a large stone fireplace and log burner. Contains comfy seating for five and a Freeview TV, with a DVD player; Kitchen/dining room: Recently refurbished, whilst maintaining the cottage character, the kitchen contains an electric oven, four ring gas hob, microwave, dishwasher, fridge with freezer compartment, kettle, toaster, washing machine and a bluetooth speaker. An ancient village once famous for its silk and corn mills, Blockley lies just 3 miles from Moreton-in-Marsh and features a unique collection of honey-coloured buildings with a pretty village green, two excellent pubs, serving hearty food and real ale, as well as a village store and café, serving dinner on a Friday night. Many walks and cycle rides through the beautiful rolling countryside of the Cotswolds can be enjoyed from the centre of the village, with the Macmillan Way, Heart of England Way and the Gloucestershire and Monarch's Way all running close by. Very close by, Moreton-in-Marsh boasts many elegant 18th century buildings and is home to traditional inns, tea rooms, restaurants and individual shops to suit all tastes. It also offers its own train station and lies on the intersection of the Paddington rail line from London. The town hosts the Moreton-In-Marsh Show, one of the UK's largest one-day agricultural shows, as well as the Moreton Beer Festival, an annual French Market, and a large outdoor market every Tuesday. The highest town in the Cotswolds, this ancient market town has played host to many fairs since the 12th century and today holds a biannual Gypsy Horse Fair, craft fairs and monthly farmers' market. Close by is Bourton-on-the-Water, which lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is known as the Venice of the Cotswolds as the River Windrush runs through the centre. Also within reach is the spa town of Cheltenham, boasting an incredible range of shops, cinemas, theatres, restaurants and pubs, as well as being famous for its horseracing festival in March, culminating in the Gold Cup steeplechase. Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon, Bath, Worcester and the waterfront city of Gloucester are also within driving distance, making Blockley a great base for a Cotswolds holiday.
