Events in the Cotswolds

The Cotswolds can be the perfect setting for a family vacation. It's a beautiful area, with plenty of parks, gardens, and old homes. It's an area that honors its history. Visitors never have to worry about being bored as there are plenty events the entire family will enjoy.

Dover's Games

One of the oldest events Cotswolds visitors can choose to attend is the Dover's Games that take place in Chipping Campden. The games, which Robert Dover first organised in 1612, look like an old fashioned country faire. When he created the event, Robert Dover dubbed them the "Olimpick" and hoped they resembled the games held in ancient Greece. Today the events include shin-kicking, tug of war, cross country and more. The event has always been fun and family friendly. Dover's Games are held in June.

Downy Duckling Days

Anyone with young children and happens to be in the Cotswolds during late May and early June will want to head to Slimbridge for the Downy Duckling Days. It will be something the kids will talk about for years and years. The local duckery gives visitors a tour that shows the entire early life of the ducklings they raise, from the incubation period through the first few weeks of life after the duckling has hatched. By the end of the tour, both kids and adults will have a new appreciation of waterfowl.

Bourton Christmas Lights

Every winter, people from all over the world descend on Bourton for the Christmas Light event. This event takes place on a single December evening and is quintessentially British. Not only do visitors get to see some amazing Christmas light displays, but they can also partake of the pig roast, Santa's grotto, listen to a jazz band, and enjoy some late night Christmas shopping. Anyone attending the event wants to be there by 6pm when the world famous tree by the river will be turned on for the first time of the holiday season.

The Cotswold Show

In early July, the Cotswold Show gives visitors a chance to cut loose and enjoy a good, family friendly faire. Children and adults won't be the only ones who enjoy the faire as dogs are also invited to take part in the event, and to participate in the family dog show. Children will want to visit with the animals, which include the world famous Cotswold sheep and a falconry village. Adults will enjoy the opportunity to browse through local wares before listening to great, live music.

Food Festival

Anyone who loves good food will want to make their way Gloucester for the food festival that takes place each July. The event attracts top chefs from all over the country. Kids get to participate in some cooking classes while adults can enjoy live music while eating amazing, freshly prepared treats. The artisan market has more than 80 producers each year. This has always been a free admission event.

Jane Austen Days

When she was writing her romantic novels, it is unlikely Jane Austen had any inkling of the number of lives her books would touch. Nor is it likely she would have ever imagined that Bath, England would ever honor her with a festival. Folks who chose to attend the Jane Austen Days have a rare opportunity to see her novels come to life in the form of skits. The event can also be a great opportunity to learn about Regency life. Activities include etiquette lessons, dancing lessons, Regency fashion advice, and even a costume fashion show.

No matter what time of the year it may be, there will always be something going on in the Cotswolds. Many of the events attract people from all over the world!
