Popular baby names

Baby fever is in the air at the moment – from Beyoncé, to Binky to Cheryl Cole, loads of our fave famous faces are expecting or have had a baby in 2017. If you’re also expecting a little one in 2017 you’re no doubt starting to research a name for your baby, which we know is not an easy task! So if you’re looking for a little inspiration our research might just be what you need.

We’ve analysed the most popular boy and girl names for every UK city and mapped them in our infographics below.

Our research turned up some interesting results. Olivia and Amelia continue to hold the crown as two of the most popular girls’ names, with either Olivia or Amelia being the top girl’s name in over half of UK cities. For boys Oliver and Jack remained popular, each being the top boy’s name in 12 UK cities.
Some of the less common names, which topped the list in just one city, include Eilidh and Tom in Perth, and Ryan and Grace in Newry.

Our research also included finding the most popular names across the entire UK as whole, which interestingly offered some new additions which didn’t feature highly in many individual cities but remains a popular choice across the UK as a whole; such names include Muhammed, Ethan, Sophia and Isla.

So if you’re looking for baby name ideas for your bump, have a look to see what’s popular in your area - or if you’re looking for something truly unique see which names to avoid.
If you’re not expecting a little one at the moment have a look to see how popular your kids’ names are now in your area, or even your own name.
