 The History of Stow-on-the-Wold

Stow-on-the-Wold is a town in the Cotswolds that has always been a center for trading, hospitality and commerce. While there are many surrounding villages, people have settled here since the Iron Ages due to the availability of goods and trading. All of the roads in the area come to a junction here, and this has been the case for centuries. In fact, Daniel Defoe once reported that some 20,000 sheep were once sold on "The Square" in a single day! The Square is still an exciting attraction, and is also the main point of commerce and trading for the people who still live here today. It is the location of the oldest inn in all of England, with a history that goes all the way back to 987 A.D.
